Sprint to offer Blackberry Pearl 8130 Next Month
Sprint Nextel Corp. said it will sell the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 next month, the first time Sprint has offered a BlackBerry smart phone from Research In Motion Ltd. to support the carrier's music and TV services.
As with all the major carriers in recent announcements, Sprint focused on the device's ability to connect with media content over its Mobile Broadband Network, also known as its EV-DO Rev. 0, which is advertised with speeds of 400Kbit/sec. to 700Kbit/sec. on average.
Over that network, customers will be able to reach the Sprint Music Store, Sprint TV, OnDemand (a customized news, sports and weather update based on a user's ZIP code) and Spring Navigation for Global Positioning System-enabled driving directions and moving maps.
Various charges for those services will be applied in addition to the cost of the phone and standard voice and data contracts. Sprint did not announce the price for the phone, which goes on sale next month online and through retail and other channels.
Danny Bowman, vice president of customer equipment at Sprint, said business travelers will be able to use the Pearl and avoid having to use a laptop on some trips.
In addition to GPS, the Pearl features a 2-megapixel camera and an external memory card slot for added storage, noise-cancellation technology, Stereo Bluetooth and other features.
The device receives e-mail automatically with BlackBerry push technology and can function as a wireless modem when used with a laptop and an included USB cable.
The Pearl weighs 3.4 ounces, has a color display that is 240 by 260 pixels, and is 4.2 by 1.9 by 0.6 inches in size. The display sits above a Suretype keypad, which is both a number keypad with an overlay of a full QWERTY keypad. Trackball navigation is provided as well.
The Pearl is of one of four wireless smart phones that Sprint said it would deliver by the end of the year. The others are the HTC Touch, which has touch-screen capabilities similar to Apple Inc.'s iPhone; the Palm Centro, which features a full keyboard and touch-screen navigation; and the LG Rumor, with a traditional phone touch pad and a separate slide QWERTY keyboard.
